The Colorado Mountain Club's Recreation Impact Monitoring System (CMC RIMS) serves as a platform where grassroots citizen scientists gather observable data to support public land managers in the monitoring of trails, campsites, and natural resources. It allows individuals to input data in a structured, evaluative manner, enhancing the ability of Federal, State, and local land management entities to make well-informed decisions. As an advocacy and conservation tool, CMC RIMS aids in the responsible stewardship of our public lands, aiming to enhance recreational experiences while safeguarding natural resources for future generations. The system accommodates the data gathering needs of both individual users and organizations.

Organizations interested in establishing data collection and utilization strategies can reach out to CMC at conservation@cmc.org for assistance.

The free functionalities of CMC RIMS include:
<ul>
 <li>Map-based interface featuring online & offline GPS positioning</li>
 <li>Search capabilities for Trailheads, Water Access points, & Campsites in proximity</li>
 <li>"Check-In" feature for documenting ongoing recreational activities and contributing to visitor use monitoring</li>
 <li>Ability to upload images</li>
</ul>

In addition to the no-cost features, volunteers engaged in monitoring using CMC RIMS can input data related to assessing and cataloging:
<ul>
 <li>Trails</li>
 <li>Campsites</li>
 <li>Water access locations</li>
 <li>Signage and infrastructure</li>
 <li>Visitor utilization patterns</li>
</ul>

CMC offers training sessions on how to conduct assessments. Upon successful training completion, volunteers are recognized as trained citizen scientists and granted access to monitoring features within the application.
